SCRANTON, PA- The York College Spartans returned from their opening weekend in California and continued their early out of conference schedule by splitting a doubleheader with the Scranton Royals on Thursday afternoon in Scranton, PA.
The Green and White fell in the first game by a score of 2-0, but were victorious in the second with a 12-4 outcome that ended after the 5th inning. The Spartans, who improved to 4-3, were able to get their bats hot in the second game after the shutout, dropping Scranton to 2-2 on the season.

How it Happened
• Carley Noble and Natalie Rietema made for an exciting pitching duel as the two teams combined for just two hits through four innings. Rietema would finish with seven strikeouts in six innings of work, lowering her ERA to 3.57. Noble went past the sixth and finished with a complete game shutout, striking out four and walking just two.
• In the bottom of the fifth, the Royals would put up two unearned runs on a combination of great base running and some untimely Spartan errors, which ultimately decided the game. Freshman Celia Totaro's single with two outs brought home two runners with the bases loaded.
• York had the top of the order up in the sixth inning and had a runner on third after sophom*ore Gretchen Barstad produced the team's only extra base hit with her two-out triple. However, Barstad was stranded and Scranton escaped the jam.
• After Rietema wiggled out of another bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans had one last chance to start a rally. York was able to put a runner in scoring position after Bri McKeown recorded a pinch hit single and Reagan Wolford walked. However, Noble was able to force a ground out to the next hitter to put the game away.

How it Happened
• After being blanked in game one, the Spartans wasted little time in jumping on top of the Royals in game two. Daphney Adams opened the scoring with a two-run triple to center for the 2-0 lead. Emma Wade quickly made it 4-0 with a two-run shot to left center for her secong homer of the game.
• The Royals got on the board with a Sarah Stepnowski RBI triple, who was later brought home on a base hit by Alexa Bruno cutting the Scranton deficit to two runs.
• York added to the lead in the second as Wade ripped a two-run double to right center, scoring Gretchen Barstad and Rylee Dreyer for the 6-2 lead. Scranton added single runs in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the third, cutting York's lead to 6-4.
• The Spartans once again put up four runs in the top of the fourth, pushing their lead to 10-4. The bottom of the lineup provided the support this time with Alexis McDonaugh, Kylee Paules, and Olivia Turchi each recording RBIs in the inning.
• The fifth inning saw the Spartans close out the scoring with a pair of runs. Wade had her fourth hit of the game with an RBI double to right center while Bri McKeown had an RBI single to provide for the final 12-4 score. In the bottom half of the fifth, freshman left-hander Krysten Coppage retired the three Royals she faced to put the mercy rule into effect. Coppage had two strikeouts and one walk while allowing four runs in the win.
